City update: New DG coming to city; more problems with sidewalks

March 24, 2022

A new Dollar General will be breaking ground in Comanche and it will be one of the largest, if not the largest, in the state, according to city manager Chuck Ralls.

Ralls said the company applied for a permit for the vacant area north of City Hall and are expected to break ground around June 1.

“It will be 15,000 square feet and will be finished sometime this summer,” Ralls said.

More problems with sidewalks

Ralls said the new city sidewalks are “a disaster” right now. Monday’s rain showed some flaws in the design as some of the downtown businesses flooded. ODOT is expected to arrive later in the week in order to find a solution.

Walking trails under construction

Work on the walking trails at Jackson Park has begun. The rain held up some of the work, but the construction is expected to resume shortly.

“It’s going to look really nice,” Ralls said. “We are taking the old decorative light posts from Main Street to use as lights out there. The base has not been done yet. Once it is done, it will be paved.”

Street projects

The street project bid has been awarded and Ralls said several streets will be redone throughout the city.

July 4th fireworks fund

The city is two-thirds of the way to collecting enough money to have a fireworks show, but it is still looking for donations.

There is a $3,008 carryover from last year and the city council agreed to put in $3,000, which leaves a needed balance of $3,250 in order to have the annual show.

Anyone wishing to make a donation can send it to City Hall.

Keep Oklahoma Beautiful in town

Wednesday, the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful organization was to be in town for a statewide meeting. Comanche has received grants the past few years like painting at the Chisholm Trail Trading Post and the painting of City Hall.

Ralls said about 50 people are expected to be meeting at the Asbury Complex on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
