Final regular season game for Indians

by Todd Brooks

Comanche could not find a replacement for its replacement and ended up sitting at home in Week 9.

Last week, the Indians were scheduled to have a road district game at Coalgate, but Coalgate had to cancel because of COVID-19 precautions.

While disappointing the situation was not a complete loss as Comanche picked up a non-district game at Carnegie, but that changed just two days before kickoff. Carnegie called and informed Comanche they, too, would have to cancel. It had nothing to do with COVID-19. The ice storm earlier in the week had caused damage at the school in Carnegie and the Wildcats would not be able to play.

The Comanche coaching staff went into scramble mode again to find a game, but this time they were not as fortunate as they were earlier in the season when they found Perkins-Tryon to replace Marietta on the schedule. The result was an unplanned and unwanted bye week.

Not being able to play did not do the Indians any favors. Already guaranteed a playoff spot due to the new rules this year, Comanche is right on the border of being able to host a playoff game in the first round. Currently, they are on the outside looking in. Marlow and Frederick have more than likely already secured the first and second seed out of 2A District 4 and already have wins over Comanche. Lindsay and Davis are tied at 3-2 in district play for the third and fourth spots.

That leaves Comanche at 1-3 in district play and in fifth place – on paper at least.

District records will not have the final say in the rankings, however. Because of the uneven amount of district games played by teams, coaches in the district will decide the final rankings. The top four get home games and the bottom four get road games.

While Carnegie would have been a non-district game, it would have given Comanche an opportunity to make a good impression on coaches voting in the district.

The Indians are scheduled to be back in action this Friday when they travel to play at Lindsay, which could end up being the deciding factor. A win could be what the Indians need to push them into the top four, but there are no guarantees.
The Leopards were picked to win the district in the pre-season, but suffered two big losses to Marlow and Frederick.
