Comanche basketball sweeps Tishomingo on Senior Night

Both the Comanche Indians and Lady Indians snapped a three-game losing streak with wins over visiting Tishomingo during Senior Night last Friday.

It was the last regular season home game for both teams. They will host Frederick this Friday for the district tournament. Comanche will then play at the sub-regional site in Purcell next week for the first game and then the rest of the regional will be played at Lone Grove. The winners and runners up from the regional advance to the area tournament in Ada.

At the district tournament, the girls will play at 6 p.m. and the boys will follow.

Tishomingo came into the game 4-13, but for the first half they played like a 13-4 team as they gave Comanche fits for the opening two quarters.

Comanche broke open a close game in the third quarter and cruised the rest of the way for the win.

There were eight lead changes and two ties in the first half, including seven straight lead changes on consecutive possessions in the second quarter.

At halftime, Tishomingo held a 22-21 lead but the final lead change would come in the third quarter when Comanche’s Gracee Miller scored the first points in the half that would give the home team the momentum boost it needed and they closed out the third quarter on a 15-4 run to take a 36-26 lead into the final quarter.

After Tishomingo scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 36-28, Comanche responded with a 15-0 run to put the game away with Miller leading the way with drives to the basket, scoring 11 of her game-high 24 points in a span of 2.5 minutes on the clock.

Comanche had found its way to the free-throw line much more often than Tishomingo. Comanche shot 17 free throws (shooting 13-of-17) compared to five (3-of-5) for Tishomingo.

Comanche’s Hunter Lassley got hot early and Colby Shannon got hot late as Comanche held off a fourth quarter charge by Tishomingo to get the win.

The Comanche boys took the lead after two previous lead changes and a tie for good with just under two minutes to go in the first quarter on a Lassley three-pointer that gave the home team a 7-5 edge.

After Tishomingo scored the first basket of the second quarter to cut the lead to 9-7, Lassley scored the next eight points for his team to push the lead to 17-7. Tishomingo made a run at the end of the half to cut the lead to 19-13 going into halftime.

The teams traded baskets for the most part in the third quarter before Comanche took a slim 26-23 lead into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Tishomingo got within one point of Comanche twice but Comanche always answered. After the visitors had cut the lead down to 44-42 with seven seconds left, Shannon hit two key free throws to make it a two-possession game with just four seconds left. They would need both as Tishomingo’s Vandever hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to make it a one-point game.
