Indians wrap up regular season

The Comanche baseball team wrapped up third place in District 3A-2 last Thursday with a sweep of Frederick.

The Indians (17-15 overall, 8-4 district) will host Newkirk (11-13 overall), who finished sixth in District 3A-1 today (Thursday) in the district tournament. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. An “if necessary” game would be played Friday at 1 p.m.

The two teams only have one common opponent this season as both teams played Oklahoma Christian School, which won District 3A-1. Comanche lost to OCS by an 8-4 score at the Jones tournament and Newkirk lost by 15-0, and 11-2 scores in district play.

In the first game, Comanche scored four runs each in the third and fourth innings to take a 9-1 lead and break open a close game.

All the runs in the third inning came after two outs and nobody on base. In the top of the fifth, Gunner King blasted a grand slam to account for all four runs.

Comanche added two more runs in the top of the fifth. Frederick rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 11-6 and then added their final run in the bottom of the seventh.

Brady Dobbins and Landon Steele both went 2-for-4 with a double to lead the Indians. Colby Shannon went 2-for-4 in the game and Gabe Diaz also had a hit.

The Indians broke open a 4-all tie in a big way in the bottom of the fourth inning in game two when they exploded for 17 runs to put the game away.

Comanche sent 21 batters to the plate in the inning. In the inning, they had four singles, three doubles, two triples, five walks, three hit by pitch and reached on an error.

Ian Essex, Gunner King and Brady Dobbins all recorded two hits in the game with the other three hits coming from Colby Shannon, Landon Steele and Payton Jones. Jones, Steele and Dobbins had doubles and Essex and Shannon had triples in the game.

Essex drove in four runs and Dobbins drove in three to lead the team.

Comanche 1

The Indians were limited to one hit by Ian Essex in the game.

Cache scored seven runs in the first inning and six more in the sixth to put the game away.

Monday

Comanche 1

In the final home game of the regular season, the visiting Longhorns posted six runs in the top of the first and then held on the rest of the way to get the win.

Comanche had two hits in the game with Ian Essex and Gabe Diaz each getting one.
