The Comanche Times received two second place and three third place awards in the 2023 Better Newspaper Contest announced at the Oklahoma Press Association annual convention last weekend in Oklahoma City.

The Times received a second place award in the “News Coverage” category in its division. The category takes into account the amount, interest and quality of news coverage throughout the entire newspaper.

Owner/publisher Todd Brooks received second and third place awards in the “Sports Story” category. Brooks received second place for his “Communities rally around player: Jones back home as he recovers from injuries,” story about the injury of Comanche football player Payton Jones during a game at Community Christian. Brooks’ story on Kooper Doucet winning a wrestling state championship in his final attempt in a story titled, “A Family Tradition: Kooper latest Doucet state champion,” took third place.

Brooks received a third place award in the “News Story” category on the Comanche City Council meeting dealing with the cemetery controversy titled “Answers sought about cemetery at council meeting.”

Brooks also received a third place award in the “Column Writing” category.
