Wynnewood up next for Indians
Now with their first game under their belt, the Comanche football team is looking ahead to week two and their first of at least six road trips this season.
The Indians head to Wynnewood, a team playing its first game of the season since they did not have a week zero game like Comanche did against S&S Consolidated.
“I think there is an advantage in that we’ve already played a real game,” said Gary Robinson, head coach. “I think there could be a disadvantage in that we could be a little more beat up than they are because in a real game, you play a lot more plays than a scrimmage. You play a lot more plays in real situatution and I think that’s where we have a little bit more of an advantage. If we can just get our bumps, bruises healed up, we’ll be ready to go Friday night.”
Sophmore running back and linebacker Hollister Pollock missed the S&S game after suffering a knee injury in the scrimmage at Healdton the week before. Robinson said he hopes to have Pollock back by the first district game. Offensive lineman Clayton Brantner went down with an injury against S&S Consolidated, but Robinson thinks Brantner may be able to play this week.
“We saw some things on film that we’ve got to correct,” Robinson said. “Things that didn’t get caught that could hurt us in the future like blocks in the back that we don’t need to be doing. We’re fixing those things and maybe a couple of holds that didn’t get called that we need to fix, but just the little things.”
Robinson has seen the Wynnewood scrimmages and thinks the Savages will be a tougher challenge than the Rams were in the first game.
“They have better athletes than the team we just played,” Robinson said. “Defensively, I think they are pretty darn good. They’ve just got good athletes and run to the ball. I think they still have some work to do on alignments and everything, but they’ll be ready for us come Friday night. They’re better on defense than they are offense.”
The Indians may be fortunate that the Savages’ top running back from last year, a Baylor commit, transferred to Pauls Valley over the summer.
“They like to spread it out, very similar to what we do,” Robinson said. “They like to run a lot of buck sweep where they pull the guards, so we’re expecting those guys to be around the edge quite a bit, like (S&S) did Friday night. I didn’t see a whole lot of up the middle stuff. I think they’re better at running than they are the pass.”
Wynnewood is coming off a 4-6 season in 2023.
A healthy Stephens County requires great community news.
