Beggs overpowers Comanche
Comanche football coach Gary Robinson said before the season even started his team was going to have to stay healthy to be successful.
Unfortunately for the Indians that has not been the case as Comanche’s injury list continues to grow through the toughest part of their schedule.
Last Thursday, the Indians made the long drive to Beggs to face a ranked opponent with the Indians having several starters out. The result was a 55-7 win for the Demons.
“We’re a little bit down right now,” Robinson said. “I’ve got nine starters out this week (against Davis) and had seven out going into Beggs, which if they go both ways means we have 18 starters out on offense and defense.”
That does not mean the Indians are quite ready to hang up their helmets just yet.
“We’re doing our best and it’s good for a lot of these freshmen to get some playing time and starting games,” Robinson said. “There’s no excuse. Beggs is a great team, they’re in the top five in the state and Davis is in the top five in the state.”
Robinson said he may get a couple of starters back but he isn’t optimistic.
“We’re trying to get healthy and it’s going to be hard, but our kids are working hard,” Robinson said. “They are showing up for practice, lifting weights and doing everything they need to do to get things done. We’re just a little undersized and our manpower is down a bit compared to who we are trying to play right now.”
As of Tuesday morning, Robinson wasn’t even sure who his long snapper was going to be this week thanks to injuries.
“Ayden Reed was our long snapper earlier in the season before he got injured and then our other long snapper, Kruz Lile, got injured against Beggs,” Robinson said. “We’re going to have to find another long snapper this week or punt from the shotgun formation like we ended up doing against Beggs after Kruz got banged up.”
Beggs built a 55-0 lead before Comanche scored late in the game with quarterback Colby Shannon scoring the touchdown to cap off a 70-yard drive.
“All these freshmen getting experience now will be helpful in the future, but it’s a little tough right now,” Robinson said.
Comanche (2-5 overall, 1-4 district) will be back on the road this week at Davis (4-3, 4-0) before returning home next week for their final home game of the season against Community Christian. They close out the regular season at Holdenville.
A healthy Stephens County requires great community news.
