November 05, 2024
Hodge Wood, a man of relentless determination and service, passed away on Oct. 24, 2024. Born in Holdenville on March 15, 1953, and raised in Midwest City, he developed a deep sense of patriotism and lifelong friendships. After high school, Hodge served in the Air Force during the Vietnam era, stationed in Korea’s demilitarized zone.
In 1977, a severe accident left him totally paralyzed. He defied all expectations in his recovery and became an Occupational Therapist through the University of Oklahoma. During his time at OU as a student, he met and then married the love of his life, Beth, in 1980. They shared a life filled with love, OU football, and waterskiing.
Throughout his career as an occupational therapist, Hodge made significant contributions to Oklahoma’s rehabilitation field. He laid the groundwork for the Jim Thorpe Rehab Center, founded Oklahoma’s first adaptive aquatics program, and developed multiple programs in industrial rehabilitation. In 1991, he was selected as Oklahoma Occupational Therapist of the Year.
Hodge authored an award-winning memoir: “Chum Water - Sharks on Wounded Fish.” His story details the challenges of his recovery, path through school, and inspires others to never quit.
He became an active member with the Paralyzed Veterans of America in 2000 where he served with devotion, giving back to a community he deeply respected and understood. As an author, he shared his story and message, reaching people beyond his immediate circles, offering hope and motivation to those facing their own battles.
Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2021, he continued to battle with courage and determination. He was preceded in death by his brother John Thomas Wood; and his sister Beverly Faith Wood. Hodge is survived by his wife Beth; sons Cody and Dalton; daughters-in-law Elexis and Lacey; and grandchildren, Serenity Grace and Liam Emmett.
A healthy Stephens County requires great community news.
