A game that transcends sports

by Tom Cole

This past Saturday was the Army-Navy football game. Dating back to 1890 as one of the oldest and most historic rivalries in college football, this game transcends the sports world.
Unlike most football games, this game is about so much more than just the final score – although I do want to congratulate the Navy on their huge win! This game is truly about tradition, camaraderie, leadership, honor, pride, and, of course, patriotism. The players are playing not just for their teammates, but for their entire military branch. When the West Point and Naval Academy football players take the field, they represent the sacrifice of all of the brave men and women in our Armed Forces.
Additionally, the Army-Navy game is a national event. Every year, Americans from all over the nation gather around their television or in the stadium to watch the pageantry of the pre-game ceremonies. From the military flyover to the parades to the Game Ball Run to the national anthem to the coin toss featuring the Secretary of Defense, these military traditions remind us to take a moment to pause and honor the men and women who selflessly serve in our United States military, both past and present.
In a time of so much political division, this game also serves as a rare moment of unity. Americans from every political party, race, religion, and background come together to watch this game, sharing their love and pride for our country.
In conclusion, the Army-Navy game is so much more than a football game. It is an important and much-needed reminder of what it means to be American. It is a celebration of our military and those who serve in it. So, to those who currently serve or have served in the past – thank you.
