Showing a little kindness

A small but enthusiastic group of school-age children are spreading joy locally through the Kids Kindness Club in Comanche.

Child volunteers meet together on the final Wednesday of every month to work on projects and talk about things they have done or can do to spread kindness. 

They come from Comanche, Duncan and Marlow and meet at the HOPE Center on S. 8th Street in Comanche. There are currently eight children participating regularly.

Last Wednesday, the group was making Valentine’s Day cards to be delivered to residents at Meridian Nursing Home and other local senior citizens.

Adult leader Sheila DeCarlo said the program started last August when the school year began. She said the club was the idea of Christian Helping Hands Executive Director Pam Dobbins.

“It was her dream to get kids involved in the community and for them to work together,” DeCarlo said. 

And the children are enjoying the experience.

“Anytime you can touch someone to make their day, it’s worth it,” DeCarlo said. “This gives the kids something to talk about as they get to serve others.”

Last year, the group packed 14 Samaritan’s Purse Christmas boxes and sponsored an “angel tree” for residents of the nursing home, seeking out donations from the community to provide Christmas presents.

The club meets between an hour and an hour-and-a-half.  There is a snack time with snacks provided. There is no sign-up process. Interested students can just show up for a meeting.

“Parents are welcome to attend,” DeCarlo said. “They can drop the kids off and come back to pick them up or they are invited to stay. We can always use an extra hand. Every little bit helps.”
