Comanche hosts county rival on Senior Night
The charity stripe was not so charitable to the Comanche girls against Marlow in a 37-33 loss on Friday night.
The Lady Indians went 10-for-22 from the free-throw line on the night, while the Marlow Lady Outlaws were 16-for-27. That statistic and a huge rebounding edge to Marlow proved to be the difference.
Even with those things going against them, Comanche nearly pulled off a big comeback. The Lady Outlaws led by 10 points with 5:38 remaining in the game when the Lady Indians made a run, cutting the lead down to one possession with less than a minute to go. Comanche, though, would go 1-for-4 from the line in the final minute, allowing Marlow to stay ahead. Marlow’s Carson Lovett sealed the win with a free throw with one second left to make it a four-point game.
Neither team could find much of an offensive rhythm, especially in the first half. Comanche’s Raelee Ellis opened the game with a three-pointer, but Comanche would only get one more point in the quarter as Marlow took an 8-4 lead heading into the second quarter.
Comanche would return to retake the second quarter lead on back-to-back baskets by Drai Sparks, which gave the Lady Indians a 13-12 edge. Marlow, though, would close out the quarter on a 5-2 run to take a 17-16 halftime lead.
Marlow asserted control in the third quarter. After Comanche’s Jaylee Roebuck drained a three-pointer a little more than a minute into the quarter to tie the score at 19, Marlow took the momentum and closed out the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 28-19 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Outlaws had an eight-point lead with 2:35 remaining when Jentry Whaley hit a three-pointer, followed by three points by Roebuck to cut the lead to 35-33 with 47 seconds left. Those would be the final points for the Lady Indians, however, as Marlow held on for the win.
It was a slow-paced game with the teams combining for 47 fouls and 49 free throws. The game lasted more than an hour and a half.
It would be the final game on the Comanche gym floor for the Lady Indians’ three seniors, Whaley, Jillian Hushbeck and Caity Ramsey.
Comanche will travel to Anadarko on Feb. 22 for the first round of district play at 6 p.m. Marlow will host Davis at 6 p.m. on Feb. 21.

Comanche stayed close through three quarters with the Class 3A No. 14 ranked Outlaws, but Marlow's big man Parker Boyles took over in the fourth quarter, helping Marlow to pull away from the feisty Indians.
Like the girls’ game before, Comanche opened the game with a three-pointer to take an early lead only to see Marlow answer with a run. This time Jiovanni Demry got the Indians on the board before the Outlaws went on a 10-0 run. Comanche fought back to make it a 14-8 game heading into the second quarter.
The Indians tied the game on a Colby Shannon basket with 3:45 left in the half and the teams would exchange the lead four more times in the final two minutes with Marlow taking a slight 22-21 advantage into the locker room.
The Outlaws looked like they were going to run away with the game in the third quarter as they opened it on an 11-1 run, but Comanche recovered with Brycen Lassley and Demry knocking down back-to-back three-pointers to cut into the double-digit lead. The Outlaws would take a 36-30 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Marlow would then open the fourth on an 8-0 run with five straight coming from Boyles, and quickly, the Outlaws’ lead had ballooned to 14 points. Comanche would only score two points in the quarter and would not score in the final four minutes, allowing Marlow to ease into the win.
The Indians will play Anadarko at Anadarko in a district tournament game on Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m., while the Outlaws will host Davis on Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
