Bishop pleads guilty to murder

April 16, 2025

According to Stephens County court records, Charlus Terry Bishop of Comanche on Tuesday pled guilty to the 2024 murder of Terry Sutton of Velma. Bishop was convicted of second-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison.
The plea comes just over a year after Bishop was arrested nearly four weeks after the April 3, 2024 murder on April 29.  Bishop was scheduled to go to trial on April 21 on first-degree murder charges.
Law enforcement believed Bishop shot Sutton during a confrontation at the intersection of County Road 1780 and County Road 2910 in Velma. According to police reports, the men had been seeing the same woman. Video obtained from a nearby home security camera showed Bishop at the intersection as well phone date from Bishop's phone. Bishop initially told police that he had arrived at the woman's residence earlier in the afternoon and was still there at the time of the murder.
Sutton managed to drive away from the scene but crashed into a residential pond where he was later pronounced dead by first responders.
