Good teams can make other teams pay for their mistakes and that’s what happened at Comanche’s home opener last Friday night when Class A No. 7 Wynnewood claimed a 31-6 win.
The Indians didn’t quit, however, and that is good news to head coach Gary Robinson.
“I thought we played hard and that’s kind of what we are trying to get out of them right now,” Robinson said. “We did make quite a few blocking assignment mistakes and some stuff on defense we didn’t do correctly. But that is stuff we can fix. What we’ve been talking about today (Monday) is we have got three weeks until we play Tishomingo (in the district opener) and the way our kids are playing I think we are going to have a good, good district record. I don’t want to guarantee anything, but I just think with the effort we will have a chance to win some games against teams on our level.”
Despite the final score, Robinson did think his team played well against the Savages overall.
“They have a lot of numbers, almost 60 players on their roster,” Robinson said. “We kind of gave them that last touchdown because I went for it on fourth down instead of punting it. They just decided to go ahead and try to score. By that point, we were just so tired. But, our kids played hard and I’m proud of them still.”
Wynnewood took a 17-0 lead on two touchdowns and a safety before Comanche scored in the waning seconds of the first half on a five-yard pass from Carson Vansickle to Rylan White. The two had connected a few plays earlier, but that touchdown was called back on a penalty. That gave the Savages a 17-6 halftime lead.
Wynnewood would go on to score two more times in the second half to pull away for the win.
Erik Roy led Comanche with 30 yards on 16 carries. Vansickle finished the game 8-of-27 for 58 yards and a touchdown and an interception. Evan Gay was the leading receiver with one catch for 33 yards.
It won’t get any easier for the Indians this week when they host another ranked team, Kingston, from Class 2A-I. The Warriors lost to Fairview, 23-21, last week. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
