Cross country opens season

September 03, 2020

The Comanche cross country teams competed in their first meets of the season with two Indians coming away with first-place finishes at the meet in Duncan.

Jaylee Miller won a sprint at the end with her opponent from Bridge Creek, winning by .03 of a second, while Brycen Lassley won the junior high boys race by two seconds.

The Comanche Jr. High girls’ team was the most successful overall, finishing in third place.

“I was really pleased with all the kids that ran with us,” said Jason Miller, head coach. “We had really good results in each race, bringing home medals in all divisions. Jaylee won first in the high school girls race and Ryleigh Woody and Sarai Alvarez also had strong showings in their first race of the season.”

In the high school boys race, Landon Ellis medaled by finishing seventh as he competed in a race with much larger schools.

Miller said Ellis and Lassley looked impressive.

The Comanche Jr. High’s third-place finish was led by Jillian Evans, who placed third overall, and was one of three Comanche runners who finished in the top 10. Brilee Combs and Karsen Bowles were the others.

“(Jillian) has really put in a lot of work to improve and it is paying off,” Miller said. “If we can get a couple of the other girls (who finished out of the top 10) in a little better running shape, that team will be tough.”

The high school boys finished 12th overall. The high school girls did not have enough runners to get a team score. Neither did the junior high boys.
