Work begins on school buildings

June 16, 2021

The Comanche Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, June 8, 2021.

Summer projects are underway and superintendent Julie Bills reported that painting of the high school hallway has been started and that reflooring would begin within the next few weeks. The middle school bathroom updates should begin after the high school flooring is installed.

Board members approved various routine consent agenda items, including the minutes of the May regular board meeting, activity fund reports, and the treasurer’s report. Superintendent Bills presented the CIPA policy to board members and reminded them that the policy is required for participation in E-Rate funding. She stated that there are no changes from the previous year.

The board also approved contracts for various services and a lease agreement with Little Explorers Daycare for the use of the buildings on the Liberty Campus. Also approved were encumbrances in the General, Building, and the Child Nutrition fund.

Bills reported that the district would not serve meals over the summer and that all meals for students should be free next school year pending waiver approval.

Bills updated the board that she had met with the ODOT surveyor and engineer on the road construction/right of way project.

Bills informed the board that the State Board of Education had rescinded the March 25, 2021 resolution concerning charter school funding. Bills let the board know if the SBE rescission action becomes final, the districts involved, in consultation with the attorneys, will decide whether to dismiss the lawsuit.

Bills noted that the district would be required to have an updated 21-22 Learning Plan (Return to Learn) to receive future Stimulus funding.

In other action, the Board of Education approved the rehiring of support personnel for the 21-22 school year. The board approved the hiring of Fabian Reyes for a teaching/coaching position, Braylen Rogers for the elementary janitorial position, Wanda Telford for the child nutrition assistant position, and Candace Albrecht as student technology services director.

Board members were advised by the Superintendent Bills that the middle school counseling position is still open. “We are in the process of interviewing candidates.” Bills said. “I am sure we will find the right person to complete our team.”
