Comanche wrestlers complete busy week

The high school wrestling regular season is rapidly coming to a close and the Comanche wrestling team is busy getting ready for for the postseason with duals and tournaments.
Last Tuesday, the Comanche girls had a dual with Duncan while the boys went to Blanchard. On Friday, the boys went to a tournament in Chickasha.
The girls match with Duncan went down to the wire with Emily Clark getting a win in the final match to break a 20-all tie and give the Lady Indians the victory.
“It came down to the last three matches,” said Casy Rowell, head coach. “Olivia Harris came in and beat a real good girl from Duncan. Once she won that, it put us in a position to win. She wrestled really smart, it was the best win of her career.”
Harris’ win was followed by Kylie Willer’s quick win by pin.
“That set up Emily with one of their better girls for the finale,” Rowell said. “She went out and wrestled well and ended up catching her and pinning her.”
The boys’ team has been battling sickness and injuries. They were not at full strength, giving up five forfeits against Blanchard and lost by 30 points.
“If you take those forfeits away, its like a 21-20 match,” Rowell said. “If we would have had some of our guys in their, it would have been more competitive and I would have felt better about it.”
Aidan Frye picked up a win at Blanchard. Legend Yates picked up his 100th career win and Gage Jessen also got a win.
The Indians only sent six wrestlers to the Chickasha High School Classic for the same reason.
Erik Roy won his weight class and Gage Jessen placed third.
“Gage got five pins in the tournament, so he wrestled really well,” Rowell said. “He slipped up in one match, but he ended beating that same kid later on in the tournament, so it was like he shouldn’t have lost to him.”
Rowell was especially proud of Roy’s effort.
“Erik wrestled amazing, he went out there and took care of business,” Rowell said. “He beat a kid from Duncan that was a state placer last year and that had beat him earlier in the year. He looked the best I’ve seen him all year. It shows you the individualness of the sport, where some guys go up and down and so it was a great opportuity for him to do some good work. I was proud of him. He wrestled excellent.”
Now the focus will be to get ready for regionals in a couple of weeks.
“This is a lot more about individuals than what the duals are. You are getting down to the ones that are really motivated and really want to do something.”
